About this book
At the court of James V, a king’s favour can vanish—and love and loyalty face dangerous tests.
In James Grant’s Jane Seton; Or, the King's Advocate, a young woman of the Scottish gentry stands at the heart of a troubled court. Jane’s love and loyalty are tested in a world where noble families watch one another, and royal favour offers no certain safety.
Scotland under James V is a country shaped by rival houses and uneasy ties between king and nobles. The title also points to the King's Advocate, the law officer who acts for the crown. Grant brings these tensions into a historical romance, with a narrator who pauses to explain the past as the story unfolds.

Edinburgh welcomes its king and French queen
The story opens on 19 May 1537, when Edinburgh welcomes King James V home from France with his bride, Magdalene of Valois. Bells ring, fountains run with wine, and armed craftsmen line the High Street.
Grant uses the procession as a map of Scotland's powers. The royal guards ride first, then the nobles, then Cardinal David Beaton in scarlet. The queen follows, lovely but already pale with illness.

Is Jane Seton a true story?
It is a work of fiction set against real history. James V, Cardinal Beaton, the Douglases and Sir Adam Otterburn were real, while the preface notes that some adventures come from old Fife legends and that the story's central passion was suggested by early records.

He is Sir Adam Otterburn of Redhall, a learned and handsome official of the new College of Justice. He can arrest and question anyone in Scotland, and his love for Jane Seton drives him to misuse that power.
