About this book
What if the road through grief leads past Rhine castles, old legends, and feelings you thought were gone?
In Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s prose romance Hyperion, Paul Flemming travels through Germany and the Alps after a deep personal loss. The young American scholar turns toward books, landscapes, and new friends in the hope of restoring his spirit. Along the Rhine, castles open the way to tales of knights and ghosts, while poets and music give his wandering journey its quiet rhythm.
In Switzerland and the Alps, Paul meets Mary Ashburton, a thoughtful Englishwoman whose company awakens feelings he believes are buried. The Baron of Hohenfels offers hospitality and conversation, adding another voice to Paul’s travels. Beneath these encounters lies a gentle question: how can someone make room for life again without forgetting the person they have lost?

Grief sends Paul Flemming up the Rhine
Paul Flemming begins the book as a man whose world has gone dim. The friend of his youth is dead, and the places they shared now hurt to look at. He leaves America so that a sea may lie between him and the grave. The narrator tells us at once that no sea can lie between him and sorrow, except the sea of time.
The first scene is set at Rolandseck on a damp December morning. Flemming has not slept, so he opens the balcony window and listens to the river rushing past. He sees none of it, because his own sadness fills his sight.

What is Hyperion by Longfellow about?
It follows Paul Flemming, a grieving American scholar who travels through Germany, Switzerland and Austria. He meets friends, hears legends, discusses poets and falls in love with Mary Ashburton, while slowly searching for peace after loss.
Is Hyperion a true story?
It is a romance, not a diary. Longfellow published it in 1839 after losing his first wife on a European journey. Many readers see his own feelings in Flemming, but the people and events are shaped as fiction.
Who are Berkley and the Baron in Hyperion?
The Baron of Hohenfels is Flemming's gentle German friend in Heidelberg. Berkley is a cheerful, eccentric Englishman who joins Flemming in Switzerland. Both offer different kinds of company and different attitudes toward sorrow.
