About this book

How does a sailor who writes books readers love become a writer they turn away from?

In Herman Melville, Mariner and Mystic, Raymond M. Weaver follows a young man whose comfortable family world gives way to hardship. The sea opens another life: merchant ships, the poverty of Liverpool, and an island valley where kindness cannot quiet his fear. These experiences become material for a writer with more than adventure on his mind.

Weaver traces Melville’s move from successful adventure books toward stranger, deeper work that loses readers. Family, friendship, and the world behind Moby-Dick share the page with a restless search for what lies behind the visible world. This first full biography also helps recover an almost forgotten writer, asking us to look beyond the sailor and meet the seeker.

The legend of madness hides the real Melville

Weaver opens with a puzzle. After packing voyages, a mutiny, marriage and books into thirty-two years, Melville lives four more decades mostly out of the public eye. The popular view held that some odd change of mind had ruined him.

What is Herman Melville, Mariner and Mystic about?

It follows Melville's life from his proud family background through his voyages, the South Sea adventures behind Typee and Omoo, the writing of Moby-Dick and his long later years, and shows how his books grow from his experience.

Why does Weaver say Melville did not go insane?

Weaver argues that insanity is a vague word the public used to dismiss a writer who doubted its cheerful beliefs. He points instead to disillusion, poor health, money troubles and a deliberate turn to private writing.

Who was Jack Chase?

Jack Chase was a Briton and captain of the maintop aboard the frigate United States in 1843. Melville admired him warmly, portrayed him in White-Jacket and remembered him in the dedication of Billy Budd.
