About this book
What if your father's name stands for courage—and everyone expects you to live up to it?
Frank Merriwell Jr. carries a name that already means something. His father, Frank Merriwell, is the Yale athlete known for loyalty, cool nerve, and honest play. Now the son must earn his own place, on the field and among his companions. A famous name cannot do that work for him.
In Frank Merriwell's Son; Or, a Chip Off the Old Block, Burt L. Standish brings school and sports rivalry into a brisk adventure about character. Short scenes keep the action moving, while the stakes reach beyond winning. The question is whether the next generation can meet the same clear standard: tell the truth, help others, and never cheat.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A baby with a star is born
The story opens with a happy birth. Frank Merriwell and his wife Inza welcome a son and name him Frank Hodge Merriwell, giving the boy the middle name of Frank's most faithful friend, Bart Hodge. Frank promises to make an athlete of the child and to give him chances he never had himself.
A French nurse named Lizette shows the family a small pink star with five points on the baby's left shoulder. Elsie Bellwood says it feels as if the boy is marked by fate. Bart has news of his own. Frank has made him a one third owner of the San Pablo mine, and Bart uses his new security to get a marriage license. The next day he and Elsie marry in Inza's room.
