About this book

What room is there for dreams when money is scarce and the neighbors watch every move?

In Flower, Fruit, and Thorn Pieces, Jean Paul follows Siebenkas, a poor lawyer who works for the poor in a small German town. At home, his wife values housekeeping and ordinary comforts. He turns toward books, ideas and play. Their marriage brings different wishes together under the steady pressure of having little money.

A close friendship gives Siebenkas room to share jokes, ideas and deep feeling. Around him, small-town life offers Jean Paul plenty to question and tease. The narrator steps into the story, wanders through long asides and takes sudden flights of fancy. Sharp social satire sits beside tenderness, and laughter leaves room for real sorrow.

What is Siebenkæs about?

It follows Firmian Siebenkæs, a poor lawyer in the small town of Kuhschnappel, through his marriage to Lenette, his money troubles, his friendship with his double Leibgeber, and his meeting with the kind and clever Nathalie.

Why do Siebenkæs and Leibgeber swap names?

They look alike, think alike, and enjoy confusing people, so they exchange names as a sign of friendship. The swap later causes trouble when Siebenkæs's guardian uses it as a reason to hold back his inheritance.

What are the flower, fruit, and thorn pieces?

Jean Paul uses the names for kinds of writing. Flower pieces are dream visions, the fruit piece is a letter about a feast of kindness on the Rhine, and thorn pieces are satire. The main story is a thorn piece.
