About this book

What can reason offer when death is no longer a distant question?

In an Athens prison cell, Socrates spends his last day with his friends. He waits for the poison he must drink at sunset, yet their conversation turns toward the soul. In Plato’s Phaedo, the question is urgent: can anything of a person survive the death of the body?

Phaedo later tells Echecrates what Socrates says and how he faces the end. Cebes fears that the soul may scatter like smoke; Simmias compares it to the tuning of a lyre. Their objections put Socrates’ reasoning under pressure, turning a conversation about death into a close test of what arguments can establish.

What you’ll discover

  • A life preparing for death Explore Socrates’ claim that philosophy prepares a person to face the end of life.
  • The soul under scrutiny Follow arguments about opposites, recollection, and the soul’s likeness to what does not change.
  • Friends who push back Meet Cebes and Simmias as they give fear and doubt a place in the discussion.
  • The theory of Forms Consider how Socrates turns to Forms to explain why things are as they are.
  • A warning worth hearing Discover why disappointment with arguments need not become a hatred of reasoning itself.

Who will love it

This is for anyone curious about death, the mind and the roots of Western philosophy, and for readers who like to watch an argument tested step by step.

What is Phaedo about?

Phaedo is about the last day of Socrates in prison before his execution. He and his friends discuss death and give arguments that the soul is immortal, while the friends raise objections that test each proof.

Who is Phaedo in the dialogue?

Phaedo of Elis was a young follower of Socrates who was present at his death. In the book he tells the events to Echecrates in the city of Phlius, so the whole dialogue is his retelling.

What are the arguments for the immortality of the soul in Phaedo?

Socrates gives four main arguments. They are the cycle of opposites, recollection of the Forms before birth, the soul's likeness to unchanging things, and the claim that the soul brings life and so cannot admit death.
