About this book
What if the voice you most need to trust is the one the crowd tells you to doubt?
In Essays — First Series, Ralph Waldo Emerson asks you to stop borrowing your convictions from others. History opens with his idea of a mind shared by all people. Self-Reliance turns that idea into a personal challenge: trust your own judgment, even when tradition, neighbors, or the fear of inconsistency press you to fall into line.
The collection also includes Compensation, Spiritual Laws, Love, Friendship, Prudence, Heroism, The Over-Soul, Circles, Intellect, and Art. Emerson moves from the costs of pleasure to the demands of human bonds. In The Over-Soul, he describes his belief in a spirit behind all minds. These essays offer bursts of insight rather than a step-by-step argument.

In short
Essays: First Series is a book of twelve essays by Ralph Waldo Emerson, published in Boston in 1841. Emerson was a former Unitarian minister who had left the pulpit and now made his living as a lecturer.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
One mind runs through all of history
Emerson opens the book with History, and the first claim is bold. There is one mind common to all people, and every person is a key to all of its works. What happened to anyone, anywhere, can in some way happen to you. So the past is not a foreign country. It is a record of what you could have done or felt yourself.
From this he draws a plain rule for reading. You should not bow to the Greeks, the Romans or the kings as if they were another race. Read their stories as if they were about your own life. Emerson says that all history becomes subjective, and in the end there is properly no history, only biography. When you read about a battle or a founding, you test it against what you know of your own heart.
