About this book
What if the nature that makes you feared is one you never chose?
In Rockland, a village in the hills of western Massachusetts, Elsie Venner lives with her watchful father, Dudley. Beautiful, solitary, and unsettling, she longs to be understood. Her mother suffered a rattlesnake’s venom before Elsie’s birth, and the family’s past shadows the way others see her.
Bernard Langdon, a Boston medical student, takes a teaching post to pay for his training. As Elsie’s feelings for him grow, he feels both pity and fear. Dr. Kittredge, the shrewd country physician, helps him look beyond blame. Through their story, Oliver Wendell Holmes asks where inherited nature ends and moral responsibility begins.

In short
What if a young woman could not be blamed for her worst impulses, because the cause lay in something that happened before she was born? Oliver Wendell Holmes asks that question through Elsie Venner, a dark-haired schoolgirl in a New England town whose cold, glittering eyes make grown teachers feel faint.

A professor worries over two small words
The story opens with an essay on what Holmes calls the Brahmin caste of New England. These are families of scholars, ministers and teachers whose gift for learning seems bred into them over generations. Nature, he says, builds each family for the life it has led.
Then the narrator, a medical professor, introduces one such young man. Bernard Langdon is the favorite of his class, handsome, proud and polite. Trouble at home forces him to leave and teach school for a while. The professor writes him a certificate saying he may teach young people of either sex, and the moment he hands it over, he regrets the phrase. He pictures a falcon let loose among the dove cotes.

What is Elsie Venner about?
It is about a mysterious girl in a New England mountain town and a young teacher who comes to know her. Beneath the story, Holmes asks whether someone can be blamed for a nature inherited or imposed before birth.
Why did Holmes call it a medicated novel?
A friend gave the story that name because it carries a scientific and moral purpose beyond entertainment. Holmes accepted the term, saying he used a physiological idea to test the doctrine of inherited guilt.
Is Elsie Venner a true story?
No. Holmes says it rests on no firmly established fact, and its characters are composites. It first appeared in the Atlantic Monthly in 1859 as a romance, and the town is not meant to be any real place.
