About this book

What if the love you trust most asks you to betray everything you are taught to honour?

On the shore of Lake Geneva, Julie d'Étanges falls in love with her tutor, Saint-Preux. She is a baron's daughter; he is a learned young man without rank or fortune. In Jean-Jacques Rousseau's Eloisa, their letters reveal a passion that Julie's father and the rules of their society will not allow.

Julie's lively cousin Claire d'Orbe guards their secret, but love offers no simple escape from family or conscience. Through distinct voices, Rousseau explores honesty, marriage, nature and duty. The lake and the mountains above it give this intense story a vivid setting, while its central question presses close: can passion and virtue live together?

What you’ll discover

  • Love without equal standing Feel the strain between Julie's noble birth and Saint-Preux's lack of rank or money.
  • Letters that bring you close Hear the lovers speak in their own voices, with tenderness, longing and difficult questions.
  • A friend who speaks plainly Meet Claire, whose practical sense and lively humour stand beside the lovers' intense feelings.
  • Mountains above the lake Follow Saint-Preux into the Alpine country as he seeks distance and calm.
  • A difficult idea of virtue Explore what duty demands when love, conscience and a father's wishes pull apart.

Who will love it

This book is for readers who love letters, confessions and the clashing voices of different people, and for anyone curious how an eighteenth century thinker pictured a good home beside lakes and mountains.
