About this book
What can you trust: what your senses reveal, what reason proves, or what religious traditions teach?
In The Sarva-Darsana-Samgraha, Madhava Acharya brings sixteen schools of Indian philosophy into an ordered debate. Materialists, Buddhists, Jains, and Hindu thinkers offer competing accounts of knowledge, reality, and liberation. Each school appears through its central claims and supporting reasons. The questions reach into daily life: what can you know, and how should you live?
The survey begins with the Charvaka materialists, who give priority to sense perception and challenge claims about unseen worlds. Ramanuja and Madhva defend devotion to a personal God but differ over God, souls, and the world. Schools connected with Shiva explore bondage and divine power, while Vaisheshika and Nyaya examine what exists and how knowledge can be valid.

In short
What if a book let every rival school of thought speak in its own voice, and then let the next school take it apart? That is the method of the Sarva-Darsana-Samgraha, a Sanskrit survey of Indian philosophy by Madhava Acharya, who died in 1386.

Pleasure is the goal and perception the only proof
The first school is the Charvaka, also called Lokayata. It holds that only four elements exist: earth, water, fire, and air. Mind arises when they combine into a body, just as the power to intoxicate arises when certain ingredients are mixed. The soul is nothing but the body with awareness.
From this follows a plain ethics. The goal of life is pleasure, and the pain that comes with it is kept small. A man who wants fish takes the bones along with it, then stops when he has enough. The school mocks the rites for the dead. If food given here feeds the departed, why not feed the people on the housetop from the ground?

What is the Sarva-Darsana-Samgraha about?
It is a survey of Indian philosophical schools. Madhava Acharya sets out the main ideas of fifteen systems in turn, from Charvaka materialism and Buddhism to Nyaya logic, Mimamsa, grammar, Sankhya, and Yoga, often presenting arguments against rival doctrines.
Who are the Charvakas and what do they believe?
The Charvakas, also called Lokayata, are the materialists in the book. They hold that only the four elements exist, the soul is the body, perception is the only proof, and pleasure is the goal of life.
Why does the book order the schools as it does?
The schools stand like a ladder of replies. Many systems challenge earlier doctrines, and the book ends with Patanjali's Yoga, which aims at stilling the mind. Shankara's Vedanta is named as the crown but left to another work.
