About this book

A fleet seeks a route to India while gods quarrel overhead and a giant waits at the cape.

In The Lusiads, Luís de Camões turns Vasco da Gama’s voyage into an epic poem about Portugal. The ships are already crossing the Indian Ocean when the story opens. Venus favours the sailors, while Bacchus schemes against them. Along real coasts, the fleet faces danger as human courage meets the rival powers of ancient myth.

The voyage also carries a nation’s story. Gama tells a foreign king about Portugal’s rulers, struggles, and independence. Across ten cantos in eight-line stanzas, Camões sets exploration beside the deeds of Aeneas and Ulysses. Yet praise has a questioning voice: amid storms and departures, the poem asks what glory costs, and whether honour can survive the hunger for empire.

What you’ll discover

  • A giant at sea Meet Adamastor, the sea giant who confronts the sailors at the southern cape.
  • Gods with rival plans Follow Venus and Bacchus as their opposing aims shape the fleet’s dangerous passage.
  • A shore full of grief Stand at Belém as crews pray and families weep over the departing ships.
  • Love amid national history Discover Inês de Castro, loved by Prince Pedro, in one of the poem’s tenderest episodes.
  • A challenge to glory Hear the Old Man of Restelo condemn the hunger for fame and distant empire.

The gods split over Portugal's sea road

The poem opens with a promise to sing of arms and men who sailed past Taprobane, the old name for Ceylon. Camões tells the heroes of Greece and Rome to fall silent, because a greater courage now rises from the shore of Lusitania. He promises the young King of Portugal true deeds, not invented marvels.
