About this book
What if a dead man still has a price—and a polite stranger knows how to profit?
Pavel Ivanovich Chichikov arrives in a provincial Russian town with good manners, neat clothes and a strange ambition. He wants to buy serfs who have died but remain alive on official lists. In Nikolai Gogol’s Dead Souls, a smooth official turns a gap in the tax records into a scheme for joining the ranks of the rich.
As Chichikov travels from estate to estate, every bargain brings another human weakness into view. Manilov offers sweet words, Korobochka fears a bad deal, and Nozdryov turns business into a game. Beneath the comedy lies a grim question: what happens to human worth when money, rank and paperwork decide a person’s value?

A charming stranger wins over a whole town
The story opens in a town called N., where a britchka stops at an inn. Its passenger is neither fat nor thin, neither young nor old. Gogol builds his hero from blanks on purpose. The waiter learns his name from a slip of paper: Paul Ivanovitch Chichikov, Collegiate Councillor.
His first questions are odd. He asks about the governor, the prosecutor and the local landowners, and how many serfs each one owns. He also asks about fevers in the countryside. A man who wants to know who is dying is not an ordinary tourist.

What is Dead Souls about?
A gentleman named Chichikov travels through provincial Russia buying the names of dead serfs from landowners. They still count as living on tax lists, and he hopes to use them to borrow money and look rich.
What does the title Dead Souls mean?
In Gogol's Russia, serfs were counted as souls in a census. A soul who had died stayed on the list until the next count, which makes dead souls a paper commodity, and the title also hints at spiritually dead people.
Who are the main characters in Dead Souls?
Chichikov is the schemer. He visits five landowners: the sugary Manilov, the cautious Korobotchka, the lying Nozdrev, the bearlike Sobakevitch and the miser Plushkin. His servants Selifan and Petrushka travel with him.
