About this book

Among steep pastures and cold lakes, magic lives close to the village—and every tale has something to teach.

Swiss Fairy Tales by William Elliot Griffis brings together folk stories from Switzerland’s mountains, lakes and valleys. The Alps shape their world: long winters, steep ground and small villages where people depend on one another. These are short tales, each offering another way into the landscape and the imagination of its communities.

The collection explores mountain life, magic, village values and the morals that stories carry. Spirits of the hills, hidden little people and creatures guarding wild places belong to this Alpine tradition. Strange helpers and threats bring wonder, while clear patterns help listeners follow along. The pleasure lies in both the telling and the lessons.

What is Swiss Fairy Tales by William Elliot Griffis about?

It is a collection of Alpine legends and fairy tales about dwarfs, giants, dragons, water spirits, and flower fairies. Each story explains something Swiss, such as the Alpine horn, the cuckoo clock, edelweiss, or cheese, and many carry a plain moral.

Where did the stories in Swiss Fairy Tales come from?

Griffis says he heard them from his Swiss American grandmother and her sisters, who learned them from Swiss parents near Valley Forge. He adds chapters on mountain life, custom, and history, and tells everything in a lively storyteller's voice.

Why is the edelweiss so important in the book?

The book makes edelweiss a brave fairy dressed in white flannel to defy the Frost Giants. Its name means noble white, and it stands for purity, faithful love, and a nation that holds its ground against invaders.
