About this book

How can we know where the mind stops without seeing what lies beyond its limits?

In Know the Truth, Jesse Henry Jones challenges a boundary placed around human understanding. His target is the theory of limitation associated with Sir William Hamilton: the view that we know only what is conditioned and finite. What seems like an abstract claim opens a direct question about every claim to knowledge.

Jones's critique enters the debate over what the mind can and cannot know. Is a limit on understanding a fact about us, or a mistake in our reasoning? At stake is how we think about the relation between mind and reality—and whether we can confidently draw a line around what is knowable.

What you’ll discover

  • A boundary worth questioning Consider Hamilton's claim that knowledge reaches only things with relations and bounds.
  • The problem with limits Ask what we must know before we can declare something beyond the mind.
  • Mind meets reality Explore the question of how the knowing mind relates to what it knows.
  • A nineteenth-century challenge Follow Jones as he pushes back against a theory that restricts human understanding.
  • A question that remains Reflect on why the boundaries of knowledge still matter beyond Hamilton's place in philosophy.

In short

What if the human mind cannot know God at all? In 1859 a Boston publisher issued a book by an Anglican clergyman, Henry Longueville Mansel, that said just this.

Mansel and Hamilton draw a line around knowledge

In 1859 a Boston publisher issued The Limits of Religious Thought, lectures given at Oxford by Henry Longueville Mansel. Jones says it spread quickly because of its clerical author and its promise to serve religion. It claimed to mark a boundary beyond which the human mind could not go when it thinks about God.

What is Know the Truth by Jesse Henry Jones about?

It is a critique of the philosophy of Sir William Hamilton and his followers Mansel and Spencer, who say the mind can know only the conditioned. Jones argues that human beings have Pure Reason and so can know God.

What is the Hamiltonian theory of limitation?

It holds that the mind can know only limited, conditioned things. The infinite and the absolute, being unconditioned, can be known only as negations. Jones calls its followers Limitists and says that this idea would leave faith without a basis.

What does Jones mean by Pure Reason?

He means a faculty different in kind from Sense and Understanding, which sees first principles directly. It supplies necessary ideas such as mathematical axioms and moral duty, and it gives people their standard for judging all other claims.
