About this book
Beyond the sand cliffs, the Atlantic turns a walk along the shore into an encounter with wilderness.
In Cape Cod, Henry David Thoreau walks the outer shore of Massachusetts with the poet Ellery Channing. Their journey begins with the wreckage of a ship at Cohasset. From there, crowded coach rides and long stretches of beach bring them close to the sea and the people who live beside it.
Thoreau seeks more than a pleasant view. He listens to an old oysterman, stays at Highland Light, and follows the Great Beach between sand cliffs and surf. Records of explorers and Pilgrims draw him into the Cape’s past. Grief, dry humor, and wonder share the page as he studies a landscape others dismiss as dull.

A shipwreck shows how little the sea cares
Thoreau begins far from the tourist road. He reaches Boston on October 9, 1849, bound for Cape Cod, and finds a handbill in the street announcing death at Cohasset. A storm has driven the brig St. John from Galway onto the rocks. She carried Irish emigrants hoping for a new life in America. Thoreau and his friend change their plans and take the train to Cohasset.
On a grassy hillside, eighteen or twenty rough boxes lie among a crowd. Carpenters nail lids shut while others lift the cloths to look at the faces. Along the road, farm wagons pass, each carrying three boxes, and their owners have become undertakers.

What is Cape Cod by Thoreau about?
It records Thoreau's walks along the outer shore of Cape Cod on three trips. He describes a shipwreck, the sand, the lighthouses, the fishermen and the people he meets, and adds history and natural observation.
Is Cape Cod a true story and when was it written?
Yes, it is nonfiction, based on Thoreau's real visits in 1849, 1850 and 1855. He worked on the chapters over several years, and the book came out after his death in 1862.
Who is the old man in the Wellfleet chapter?
He is an old oysterman of eighty-eight, a real man Thoreau stays with, whose name he leaves blank. He remembers Bunker Hill, tells stories of wrecks and oysters, and shares his home with his wife and family.
