About this book
In a Paris of old names and new money, a hidden past can put a family's honor at stake.
Émile Gaboriau's Baron Trigault's Vengeance draws you into a world of family honor, hidden pasts and scores waiting to be settled. Paris grows rich and loud, but secrets remain beneath its busy surface. In this French novel of intrigue, money and reputation give ordinary human motives the power to threaten a family's standing.
Revenge gives the story its force, while suspense grows from the slow work of settling a score. Gaboriau brings the instincts of a newspaper storyteller to this world of conspiracy and wounded honor. The appeal lies in watching private motives take shape within nineteenth-century Paris society, where an old name and new wealth carry different kinds of weight.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A ruined man and a mother's spur
The story opens with Pascal Ferailleur hiding in a small house under the name Maumejan. A slander has crushed him, and a cruel letter has told him that the girl he loves, Marguerite, is lost to him. He is close to despair, and the only thing that holds him up is the thought of his mother.
Madame Ferailleur is a stern, plain woman with a great sense of duty. She has already talked him out of suicide, and now she hires a new servant, Madame Vantrasson, the sly landlady of a shabby lodging house. The woman haggles over wages and then lets slip that she once cooked for the Count de Chalusse, who has just died.
