About this book

A crowded gaming room, a trembling girl, and a winning player who suddenly refuses her stake: what lies beneath?

In A. E. W. Mason’s At the Villa Rose, Mr. Ricardo expects another comfortable stay in Aix-les-Bains. His days revolve around drives, dinners, and baccarat at the Villa des Fleurs. Then a distressed young woman rushes into the garden, her diamond earrings shaking beneath a broad black hat. Ricardo’s pleasant routine begins to lose its calm.

Back at the gaming table, Ricardo spots Harry Wethermill, a wealthy young man whose fortune comes from science. When Celia offers a banknote, Wethermill abandons his winning position rather than play against her. He invites her to share his luck instead. These charged encounters draw you into a detective mystery of murder, deception, and the search for truth.

What you’ll discover

  • Comfort on the brink Follow Ricardo as a carefully arranged holiday begins to give way to unexpected excitement.
  • A face half hidden Meet Celia through restless gestures, glittering earrings, and a face Ricardo feels he knows.
  • An arresting refusal Watch Wethermill stop a profitable game when Celia puts her own money at risk.
  • Manners under pressure Enter gaming rooms where polished behavior struggles to contain the feelings stirred by chance.
  • The pull of truth Step into a murder mystery where deception makes the hunt for answers compelling.

Who will love it

You will love this book if you enjoy a clever detective, a setting of casinos and villas, clues you can weigh yourself, and an observer whose pride is gently teased.

In short

Picture a rich, fussy man who spends every August at a spa town, where he watches the gamblers more than he gambles. One evening he sees a girl in white satin rush into the garden, swing her slipper against the stones, and rush back inside.
