About this book

Who gets to decide which ideas reach the printed page?

In Areopagitica, John Milton challenges a law that puts official approval before the printing of any book. Writing during the English Civil War, he addresses Parliament in a speech he never delivers aloud. His pamphlet itself defies the rule: he publishes it without a licence or a printer's name.

Milton asks what happens to judgement when readers are sheltered from ideas. He turns to ancient history, questions the wisdom of appointed licensers, and argues that goodness must face a test. At stake is the room people need to read, choose, and search for truth. Yet his defence of expression has limits of its own.

What you’ll discover

  • A challenge to Parliament Follow Milton as he asks lawmakers to reconsider the licensing system they impose.

One law and one angry writer

The Licensing Order was passed by Parliament in June 1643. It said that no book, pamphlet or paper could be printed unless it had first been approved by appointed licensers. The Stationers' Company, the guild of London printers and booksellers, helped to enforce it. England was at war with the king, and Parliament wanted to control what the presses said.
