About this book
What is a crown worth when taking it costs peace—and love must answer to duty?
In A Son of the Immortals, Louis Tracy brings love into conflict with royalty. A crown taken by force carries a price, and private feeling collides with public duty. This romantic adventure turns on a question: what happens when the demands of rank stand in the way of the heart?
The novel belongs to the old-fashioned adventure tradition of royal intrigue, danger and devotion. Its world holds palaces, roads and hidden meetings, with strong feelings and clear lines between right and wrong. At its center lies the uneasy promise of power: a crown taken unjustly does not bring its wearer peace.

A Prince Meets an Artist at the Louvre
The story opens on a May morning. Joan Vernon leaves her cheap lodging in the Place de la Sorbonne and smiles at the statue of Auguste Comte. She is an artist, not a philosopher, and she spends her days copying pictures at the Louvre.
On the Pont Neuf she meets Alec Delgrado, a tall young man who plays polo for a team called the Wanderers. He carries her easel to the Grande Galerie. When she calls him an idler, he admits the word stings. Then he tells her he is Prince Alexis Delgrado, son of an exiled Kosnovian line. Joan decides that a hard-working artist must not fall for a Serene Highness, but her heart refuses to follow her good sense.

What is A Son of the Immortals about?
It follows Alec Delgrado, an exiled prince living in Paris, who falls for the American artist Joan Vernon and is called to the throne of Kosnovia after a royal murder. He tries to rule honestly while plotters circle.
What does the title A Son of the Immortals mean?
It comes from a passage Joan quotes in the Louvre about Pallas Athene, who gives her heroes more fire and drives them through danger and battle. Alec takes the words as a challenge to prove himself.
Is Kosnovia a real country?
No. Kosnovia is an invented Balkan kingdom with a capital called Delgratz on the Danube. Tracy draws on the real politics of the region, including pressure from Austria, Russia and Turkey, and the history of murdered rulers.
