About this book
On the Cornish cliffs, love faces more than a dangerous drop: birth, pride and the fear of being judged.
At Endelstow, Elfride Swancourt keeps house for her father, the vicar, with few companions and the sea close by. Then Stephen Smith arrives to survey the church. Gentle and talented, the young architect wins her heart, but his father is a mason—and Mr Swancourt wants a match of higher rank.
Henry Knight, an older London writer, brings a different kind of attraction into Elfride's life. Learned and sure of his judgment, he holds firm ideas about what a woman should be. In Thomas Hardy's A Pair of Blue Eyes, love grows under the pressure of class, reputation and a past Elfride fears revealing.

A young architect comes to a Cornish vicarage
On a wild winter evening, Stephen Smith rides sixteen miles by dogcart to survey the church at Endelstow, which the vicar plans to restore. The driver, Robert Lickpan, fills the dark road with a tall tale about Lord Luxellian's family.
Elfride, the vicar's daughter, expects a sharp old city man. Instead she finds a boy-faced youth with bright curls and a blush. She nearly laughs with relief, and he is lost on the spot. The vicar, Christopher Swancourt, is in bed with gout, so Elfride pours the tea herself. Within minutes they talk like schoolchildren.

What is A Pair of Blue Eyes about?
It follows Elfride Swancourt, a young vicar's daughter in Cornwall, who falls in love with an architect named Stephen Smith and later with his friend Henry Knight. Her secrets, her father's pride, and the Cornish cliffs shape each choice she makes.
What does the title A Pair of Blue Eyes mean?
It points to Elfride's eyes, which the novel describes as a hazy blue like autumn distance, something you look into rather than at. Her eyes sum up her gentleness, her changing moods, and her pull on both men.
Is A Pair of Blue Eyes based on a true story?
It is a novel, but Hardy drew on real things he knew, such as church restoration and the cliffs near Cornwall's coast. The people are invented. He wrote it early in his career, and the preface was added in 1899.
