About this book
What happens when the law drives honorable people into outlaw life—and loyalty becomes as dangerous as anger?
In Song-dynasty China, powerful officials use the law for private gain. At Liangshan Marsh, 108 outlaws gather after injustice, revenge, and dangerous tempers push them outside society. Water Margin, traditionally attributed to Shi Nai'an, follows their growing brotherhood through fierce friendships and frightening violence.
Song Jiang helps bind these very different people together through his generosity. Lin Chong faces persecution, Lu Zhishen strikes against cruelty, and Wu Song pursues fierce revenge. Yet their shared enemies do not settle their future. Song Jiang remains loyal to the emperor, even as corrupt officials drive men into rebellion.

A proud official frees the demons
A plague strikes in the reign of Emperor Renzong. The court sends Grand Marshal Hong Xin to Mount Longhu to bring back the Celestial Master, who can pray the sickness away. He climbs alone in common clothes, complaining with every step. A tiger leaps at him, then a white snake coils before him. A boy on a yellow ox tells him the Celestial Master has already left.
Behind the palace he finds a hall bound with a great lock and many seals. The abbot says a Demon King is shut inside. Hong does not believe it and threatens the priests until they open the doors. His laborers dig out a stone tablet and lift a great blue slab. Black vapor shoots into the sky and breaks into a hundred streaks of golden light. Hong goes home in a cold sweat, telling nobody.
