Who the Wicked Witch of the West is
In L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the Wicked Witch of the West rules the Winkie country. She watches the land with one eye, whose sight reaches as far as a telescope.
Her country lies to the west, and the land of the Winkies is yellow. Dorothy and her companions set out toward her territory after their visits to the Wizard.
The Wicked Witch of the West and the others in the story
The Wizard makes destroying the Witch a condition of helping Dorothy and her friends. He gives each traveler the same demand, although he appears to each in a different shape.
Dorothy weeps at this task, because she has never wished to kill anyone. Her companions agree to go with her, bringing their search for help toward the Witch's country.
