Training prepares Stephen for the sea

On a cliff at Ramsgate, Stephen Embleton looks toward a future his father can no longer share. Lieutenant Embleton’s wounded hip keeps him ashore, and his half-pay barely meets their needs. But he has given Stephen something valuable: practical training in navigation and seamanship. With no navy berth available, Stephen joins the trading ship Tiger as an apprentice. His careful calculations soon distinguish him from men who depend on tables and habit. His usefulness begins with preparation, not luck.

Who it’s for

Readers who love sea stories, shipwrecks and daring escapes, and anyone curious about Lord Cochrane and South America's wars of independence. It suits those who enjoy a young hero with a cool head and good seamanship.

What this book is

What would you do if a cyclone threw your boat onto a strange shore, the crew vanished into a Malay village, and you were the junior officer left to decide what came next? That is where fifteen-year-old Stephen Embleton finds himself in With Cochrane the Dauntless, long before he sees a Spanish gun. He starts as an apprentice on a London trading ship and ends up as flag officer to one of the boldest sea commanders of his age.

G. A. Henty wrote this novel for young readers in the late nineteenth century, and he built it around a real man. Thomas Cochrane fought for Britain, was driven from the navy by a rigged trial, and then took command of the fleets of Chile and Brazil. You get a survival tale in the East Indies, a close look at Cochrane's exploits told by a man who served beside him, and a chase across South America by mule, canoe and raft.

A half-pay lieutenant sends his son to sea

The story opens on a cliff at Ramsgate. Lieutenant Embleton sits with his son Stephen and looks out over the water. He served under Lord Cochrane, and the Admiralty has marked him ever since. A wound in his hip keeps him ashore, and his half-pay barely covers the bills.

For four years he has taught his son at home. Stephen can take a sight by sun, moon or stars, splice a rope and go aloft like a monkey. There is no hope of a navy berth in a shrunken fleet, so a London shipowner offers to take Stephen as an apprentice on the trading ship Tiger.

On the voyage out, Stephen works out lunar distances by calculation, while the mates rely on tables and rule of thumb. Careful training, not luck, is what first sets Stephen apart.

That’s 1 of 9 key points.
