White Fang, Chapter 5 summary

Chapter 5 of 25 · Part 2 · 9 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 5, the cub grows more skilled and cautious, suffers through famine, and helps his mother fight a lynx whose young she eats. Surviving the fight strengthens his confidence, and joining his mother in hunting teaches him that living creatures survive by eating others while risking becoming food themselves.

What happens

  1. The cub explores farther from the cave, kills a young weasel, and learns to judge danger more accurately.
  2. A severe famine makes him study prey closely and even challenge a hawk, but he catches nothing.
  3. His mother ends their hunger by raiding a lynx litter and bringing him a kitten.
  4. The lynx mother attacks the cave, and the cub helps his mother kill her despite suffering a deep shoulder wound.
  5. After a week of recovery, his mother hunts again, while the cub gains confidence and begins accompanying her.
  6. Through hunting, the cub learns that animals eat other creatures and can themselves become food, yet he finds life satisfying.
