In Chapter 36, Cassy describes the dangers of escape to Emmeline, while Legree’s troubled sleep gives way to another confrontation with Tom, who refuses to apologize for doing right. 3. Legree dreams of strangling hair, a terrifying fall, and his mother turning away from him.
  4. Cassy urges Legree to spare Tom by reminding him that losing a worker threatens his cotton bets.
  5. Tom refuses to apologize or surrender his soul, despite Legree’s kicks, whip, threats, and fist.
  6. Cassy’s touch recalls Legree’s nightmare; he stops the assault but threatens revenge, and she warns Tom of his lasting hatred.
