In Chapter 17, the companions recover in fresh air as the Nautilus rounds Cape Horn and travels north through the Atlantic toward the Amazon and Guianas. Captain Nemo remains unseen, rough seas prevent escape, and the narrator studies marine life, including an electric ray that shocks Conseil.

What happens

  1. The narrator thanks Ned Land and Conseil for keeping him alive, and Ned insists on taking him along when he escapes.
  2. The Nautilus rounds Cape Horn, enters the Atlantic, and follows South America north while Captain Nemo remains unseen.
  3. After passing Brazil at great speed, the submarine explores a deep Atlantic valley and surfaces near the Amazon.
  4. Rough seas prevent a safe escape toward the Guianas, so the narrator continues studying creatures brought up in the nets.
  5. Conseil grabs an electric ray and collapses; Ned and the narrator help him recover.
  6. Near the Maroni, manatees prompt the narrator to explain their usefulness and warn against destroying marine animals.
