Chapter 13 of 34 · Part 3: My Shore Adventure · 8 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 13, the ship reaches an enclosed anchorage, where the crew’s growing defiance leads the captain to grant shore leave and trust Silver to calm the men. Jim secretly joins a boat, regrets attracting Silver’s attention, and runs into the woods as soon as he reaches land.

What happens

  1. Jim dislikes the island’s gloomy appearance, while the windless conditions force the men to tow the ship toward its anchorage.
  2. Anderson joins the men’s complaints, while Long John confidently guides the ship through the passage.
  3. The doctor suspects fever at the anchorage, and the crew’s reluctant obedience makes mutiny seem close.
  4. The captain proposes shore leave to ease the tension, and the trusted men receive loaded pistols.
  5. Six men remain aboard while thirteen, including Silver, enter the boats; Jim secretly joins them.
  6. Silver notices Jim, but Jim’s boat lands first, allowing him to escape into the thicket despite Silver’s calls.
