Key ideas
Key idea 1
True faces live behind public masks
The storyteller begins with an argument about feeling. He believes a few people are born to feel deeply, yet the world has no place for them. A schoolmaster rejects this view, while the narrator insists that public life hides almost everyone behind the same bronze mask.
He then tells of finding an iron box of books beneath the mountain ground and copying their story to earn rice for his mother. This frame introduces the question behind the tale: what happens to people who keep a true face?

What this book is
What if the truest face in a crowd belongs to the one person nobody will hire? A storyteller in a Shanxi teahouse says exactly that. He claims he found an iron box of books in the mountain ground, and now tells the story for a hundred coins to buy rice.
Traces of Flower and Moon is a nineteenth century Chinese novel by Wei Zi'an. It follows two gifted men whom the system fails and who find each other through poems. You get a love story and a friendship story at once, with verse and riddles in nearly every chapter.

A Storyteller Frames the Tale as Found Treasure
The novel opens with an argument about the word feeling. The narrator says heaven and earth leave behind one or two people born to feel deeply, and the world has no place for them. A schoolmaster named Yu Gengxin bristles. He would trample the whole field of feeling flat.
The narrator answers that rulers, parents, brothers, spouses and friends all wear the same bronze mask, and very few keep a true face. Those who do keep one suffer, because their minds are too square and their eyes too proud.
Then comes the frame. He gathered firewood in the mountains of Gushe, and one spring the ground gave way beneath him. In the hole lay an iron box of volumes with no author and no date. He copied the book out and carries it to teahouses to earn rice for his mother.
The book opens by promising people with true faces in a world of masks.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.
