A yellow face stares over London
The story opens in a London drawing room, where Claire Helmsley and Jack Masefield wait for dinner. Claire is rich, kind and popular. Jack is a young barrister with plenty of daring and very few briefs. They are engaged, and at his wish they keep it secret from her guardian, Dr. Spencer Anstruther.
Outside the window, scaffolding is covered in posters. In the middle is a yellow face with bulging eyes and one word, Nostalgo. London has talked of little else for two months.
Claire says the face frightens her because it reminds her of someone. Jack says it reminds him of her guardian. Then the log fire flares, and Claire sees Anstruther's face dark with rage before it turns smooth and smiling again. A small likeness and a doubt about a respected man start the whole book moving. The first clue is a face that nobody can yet explain.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.
