Who it’s for

You will enjoy this if you like frontier adventure with real heroes like Boone, legends told by firelight, daring rescues, scheming villains, and love and vengeance pulling against each other.

What this book is

What kind of creature walks upright like a man, has a wolf's body and a human face, and leaves a red arrow carved on the chest of every Shawnee warrior it kills? That question opens The Wolf Demon, and the book keeps it burning to the last page. A ring circles the moon. A frightened buck races across a clearing. A lone hunter follows it, never guessing that something follows him.

Albert W. Aiken wrote this frontier tale of adventure and revenge. He was one of the busiest American writers of cheap adventure fiction in his day. The story is set in 1780 along the Ohio and Kanawha rivers, with Daniel Boone, Simon Kenton and Simon Girty among its real figures. Short chapters end on cliffhangers, so each one pulls you toward the next.

Key point 1 of 7

Two hunters share a deer and a warning

The story proper begins with two gunshots. Near the meeting of the Kanawha and Ohio rivers, two strangers fire at the same buck at almost the same moment. The wounded animal staggers into a glade and dies beneath a great oak. Both men race through the underbrush to claim it.

One is a young man with a terrible scar from temple to chin, supple as a panther. The other is about forty, with clear blue eyes and fringed forest clothes. He is Daniel Boone. He decides to talk rather than fight.

The quarrel ends in laughter. The scarred hunter gives his name by pointing to it, since he has carved Abe Lark into the oak. Boone finds a bullet mark on each side of the buck. Nobody can say which shot did the work, so they agree to split the deer.

Then the talk turns grim. Lark has news that the Shawnees and Wyandots are on the warpath again. The chief Ke-ne-ha-ha leads them, and the renegade Simon Girty will guide them. Point Pleasant lies directly in their path. The two men hang the buck from a pole and carry it back to warn the settlement.

Danger here arrives as plain news carried by ordinary hunters. The monster has already shown itself in the prologue, and that makes the warning darker.

In this book, war and dread come hand in hand.

That’s 1 of 7 key points.

Questions about The Wolf Demon; Or, the Queen of the Kanawha

What is The Wolf Demon about?

It follows the Ohio frontier in 1780 as Shawnees prepare for war. A mysterious wolf-like figure kills warriors and carves a red arrow on them, while settlers face a scheming suitor, a renegade's revenge and a coming attack.

Is The Wolf Demon a true story?

No, it is a novel. Daniel Boone, Simon Kenton and Simon Girty are real historical figures, and the Battle of Point Pleasant is a real event, but the Wolf Demon and the main plot are invented.

Who is Kanawha Kate?

She is a forest girl who dresses like a Shawnee and shoots as well as any hunter. The settlers shun her as the renegade's daughter, but she saves lives and keeps her own secret.

What does the red arrow mean in the book?

It is the mark the Wolf Demon carves on each victim with three knife cuts. The Shawnees fear it as a death sign, and its meaning is explained through a legend told by their Medicine Man.

Is The Wolf Demon easy to read?

Yes, the language is plain and the chapters are short and quick, each ending on a hook. The mix of scouts, lovers, villains and legend keeps the story clear and easy to follow.
