Chapter 7 of 12 · 15 min to read the chapter
In Chapter 7, Mole and Water Rat search through the night for Otter’s missing son, Portly, and mysterious piping guides them to an island where a kindly demigod protects him. They return Portly to his father, but the demigod removes their memory of the encounter so its overwhelming beauty does not spoil ordinary happiness.
What happens
- Rat tells Mole that Portly has been missing for days and that Otter watches each night beside the old ford.
- Mole and Rat take their boat upstream and search the banks through the moonlit night.
- Near dawn, extraordinary piping draws Rat, then Mole, toward an island beside the weir.
- They find Portly asleep between a horned demigod’s hooves, bow in worship, and forget the encounter after the figure disappears.
- They comfort Portly, take him toward the ford, and watch his joyful reunion with Otter.
- Drifting downstream, Rat hears words about rescue and forgetting in the reeds, then falls asleep.
