A ship drifts without shared direction
Lao Can dreams of a huge ship caught in a storm. Its passengers are hungry, its sailors take their belongings, and the men tending the sails work without cooperating. Believing the crew needs a compass, he and his friends try to bring one aboard. Instead of accepting help, the sailors call them traitors and the crowd destroys their boat.

What this book is
A traveling doctor dreams of a great ship sinking in a storm, and the dream sets the question for everything that follows. Who is steering the empire, and who pays for their mistakes? This is the opening of The Travels of Lao Can, a novel by Liu E, written in the last years of the Qing dynasty, when the Yellow River kept breaking its banks.
The hero is Lao Can, a clever and kindly man who rings a handbell and treats patients across Shandong. Because he holds no office, he hears what people truly say. You will meet a cruel prefect, a governor who wants honest advice, a singer who silences a theater, and a murder no one can explain.

A Dream of a Sinking Ship
The book begins with a dream. Lao Can dozes off at a rich man's house and finds himself with two friends at Penglai Pavilion, watching a stormy sea through telescopes.
A huge ship is in terrible danger. Countless passengers sit wet and hungry on the open deck. The men who tend the eight sails each work alone, and the sailors strip passengers of food and clothes. Lao Can says the crew is not evil but lost, because they have no compass. So the three set out in a fishing boat to bring one.
A loud speaker on the deck collects money and shouts at the crowd to kill the officers, while he stays out of reach. When the friends climb aboard, the sailors scream that anyone with a foreign instrument is a traitor. The crowd smashes their boat, and Lao Can wakes to a call for dinner.
A ship of state can be wrecked by fear of outsiders, greed and leaders who cannot cooperate.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.
