The Time Machine, Chapter 14 summary

Chapter 14 of 17 · 8 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 14, the traveller accidentally moves farther into the future, encounters giant crab-like creatures, and continues until he sees an almost lifeless, freezing earth. More than thirty million years ahead, an eclipse and painful breathing overwhelm him, but fear of collapsing drives him back onto the machine’s saddle.

What happens

  1. The traveller discovers that he moves forward by mistake and watches the sun’s daily movement slow to a halt.
  2. He stops on a desolate beach, where thin air troubles his breathing and giant crab-like creatures approach.
  3. He escapes an attacking crab by moving a month forward, then continues through increasingly distant stretches of time.
  4. More than thirty million years ahead, he finds snow, ice, green growth, and no visible crabs.
  5. An eclipse brings deep darkness, stronger wind, and cold, leaving him sick and frightened.
  6. As sunlight returns, he sees a tentacled creature moving offshore and climbs onto the saddle to avoid fainting helplessly.
