Chapter 13 of 68 · 12 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 13, Jacques Michel Bonacieux faces questioning in the Bastille about his abducted wife, her escape, and his dealings with d’Artagnan, while Athos exposes a mistaken arrest. Bonacieux disowns his wife to protect himself, but remains imprisoned and faints during a carriage journey whose destination he does not know.

What happens

  1. Officers take Bonacieux to the Bastille, where a commissary warns him about the cardinal and accuses him of treason.
  2. Bonacieux describes his wife's suspected abductor and claims he can recognize him, prompting the commissary to send a letter.
  3. After a sleepless night, Bonacieux learns that his wife escapes and that officials connect her escape with d’Artagnan.
  4. Guards produce Athos instead of d’Artagnan, and Bonacieux confirms the mistake through differences in age and uniform.
  5. Another letter brings fresh accusations against Bonacieux's wife; he renounces her, but the commissary orders both prisoners closely guarded.
  6. That evening, guards escort Bonacieux into a carriage; he fears successive execution sites and faints when it stops near the Traitor’s Cross.
