Chapter 22 of 28 · 17 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 22, Sir Kenneth leaves the Crusaders’ camp under the Arabian physician’s control, struggles with disgrace, and finds some comfort in prayer during their desert journey. When armed Templars appear, the physician forces him into a swift escape, then brings him to a familiar spring and gives him a narcotic that leads to sleep.

What happens

  1. Sir Kenneth refuses food in his distress and leaves the camp with the physician’s household before dawn.
  2. Hassan entertains the travelers, while Kenneth recognizes Roswal’s cries from a cage but avoids responding.
  3. The Muslims stop for dawn prayers, and Kenneth’s own worship restores some strength and patience.
  4. The physician identifies approaching cavalry as Templars, but Kenneth refuses to flee from fellow Christians.
  5. The physician scatters his followers and seizes Kenneth’s rein, carrying him away on exceptionally swift horses.
  6. At the Diamond of the Desert, Kenneth accepts a medicinal draught and sinks through hopeful visions into deep sleep.
