Chapter 11 of 28 · 28 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 11, Conrade of Montserrat exploits Leopold’s wounded pride to provoke a dispute over the Crusaders’ banners, drawing the recovering Richard into a violent confrontation. Philip prevents further fighting but cannot secure reconciliation, while Richard entrusts Sir Kenneth with guarding England’s standard and Conrade claims success in weakening the alliance.

What happens

  1. At Leopold’s banquet, Conrade presents England’s prominently placed banner as an insult to the other sovereign princes.
  2. Leopold raises Austria’s standard beside England’s, while Conrade withdraws and then falsely tells Richard that England’s banner is being replaced.
  3. Richard ignores the physician’s warning, rushes to the mount, destroys Austria’s standard, and challenges the assembled knights.
  4. The Scottish knight blocks Wallenrode’s sword stroke, and Richard throws the attacker down the slope.
  5. Philip mediates, but Richard rejects arbitration and dismisses Leopold’s attempt to join the reconciliation.
  6. Richard appoints Kenneth to guard England’s banner, and Conrade tells the Grand Master that his manipulation weakens the alliance.
