The Swiss Family Robinson, Chapter 37 summary

Chapter 37 of 59 · 10 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 37, the father, Fritz, and Jack search the rough sea for a distressed vessel but find only floating casks before worsening weather forces them ashore. They return with reeds for a carriage for the mother, while Francis and Ernest help keep the household fed, sheltered, and comfortable.

What happens

  1. The family drains the animals' stable, feeds them, eats breakfast, and prays before searching the shore for signs of shipwreck.
  2. The father, Fritz, and Jack take the canoe to investigate floating objects, find casks, and search unsuccessfully from Cape Disappointment.
  3. Rising wind forces them to leave the canoe ashore; they walk home through damaged country and replenish food at their farm.
  4. During their walk, they discuss travelers' accounts, Robinson Crusoe, possible island inhabitants, and a proposed voyage around the island.
  5. Fritz proposes a suspended reed carriage for his mother, and the three gather materials despite heavy rain.
  6. At Falcon’s Nest, Francis provides a hot meal, Ernest shelters and reads to his mother, and everyone settles down for sleep.
