Key ideas

The Smoky God; Or, A Voyage to the Inner World · Willis George Emerson1 of 9
  1. Key idea 1

A dying man entrusts his secret

A summons in the night brings Willis George Emerson to the bedside of Olaf Jansen, an old Norseman living alone near Los Angeles. Olaf gives him notes, drawings and rough maps, asking him to share them with the world. Emerson worries that readers will dismiss the account, yet accepts the promise.

The claim behind these papers is extraordinary: the earth is a hollow shell with openings at the poles. Before the voyage begins, the story places certainty and doubt beside each other.

Olaf has sailed with his father, Jens Jansen, since childhood.

Who it’s for

Readers who love voyage tales, lost worlds and old Arctic legends will enjoy this book, as will those who weigh daring theories against explorers' reports.

What this book is

What if the frozen top of the world were not an end but a door? In 1829, a young Norwegian named Olaf Jansen sails north with his father in a small fishing sloop. The sea stays open, the water turns fresh, and a dull red glow climbs the horizon.

The Smoky God, or A Voyage to the Inner World, was written by Willis George Emerson. He presents it as the deathbed account of Olaf, a ninety-five-year-old Norseman he met in Los Angeles. You get the whole voyage, from the midnight summons to the city of Eden.

A dying Norseman hands over his secret

The book opens in the voice of its editor, Willis George Emerson, and he begins by doubting himself. He fears that readers will take the story for the product of a distorted mind. Yet he insists the plain statements can be trusted as what Olaf Jansen says he saw with his own eyes.

Then comes the hook. At two in the morning, Emerson's doorbell rings. A messenger hands him a scrawled note from Olaf, an old Norseman who lives alone in a small bungalow near Los Angeles. The note says only that he is dying and that Emerson must come.

At the bedside Olaf puts notes, drawings and crude maps into Emerson's hands and asks for one promise, to give them to the world. Olaf dies as the sun rises over the San Jacinto peaks. Emerson then lays out the idea behind it all. The earth, he says, is a hollow shell about three hundred miles thick, with openings at the poles.

The frame gives the tale a human voice, a promise to keep, and a question for you to settle for yourself.

That’s 1 of 9 key points.
