The Secret Garden, Chapter 25 summary

Chapter 25 of 27 · 10 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 25, Colin’s growing strength reassures the nesting robins, and Mary helps him find space for secret exercise in unused rooms during rain. He also explains why he keeps his mother’s portrait uncovered: her smile now comforts him, and he wants his father’s love and happiness.

What happens

  1. The robin and his mate grow comfortable with Colin as they recognize that his unusual movements are part of learning to walk.
  2. During heavy rain, Colin grows restless and tells Mary he wants his father home so he can reveal his recovery himself.
  3. Mary suggests exploring unused rooms, and Colin orders John to leave them alone after bringing his chair to the picture gallery.
  4. The children run, exercise, explore rooms, and return hungry enough to astonish the servants with their empty luncheon dishes.
  5. Colin explains that he uncovers his mother’s portrait because her laughing face now pleases him rather than making him angry.
  6. Colin tells Mary that gaining his father’s love might let him share the Magic and make his father happier.
