What this book is
The score is tied in the ninth inning at Colby Hall, and a whole grandstand is shouting. Then a great boom rolls across the lake. A shell-loading plant on the far shore has begun to blow up, and a cheerful ball game becomes a rescue mission.
This is The Rover Boys Under Canvas, written by Edward Stratemeyer for young American readers during the First World War. The sons and nephews of the first Rover brothers attend a military school, where they play ball, play pranks, and keep meeting the same spiteful rivals. Meanwhile their own fathers join the army. You get a quick tour of school life in 1917, and a puzzle: who set off the explosions, and what are the clanking sounds in the woods near the summer camp?

A ball game and an explosion
The story opens at the yearly baseball game between Hixley High and Colby Hall. Hixley wants revenge for losing the football game, and it has a star pitcher. By the sixth inning the visitors lead four to two.
In the ninth inning Jack Rover hits a home run that ties the game. Then Fred slides home with the winning run. The cheering has barely started when the ground shakes. Across Clearwater Lake, the Hasley Shell Loading Company is blowing up. Smoke rolls skyward, small shells pop like machine guns, and wreckage flies through the air.
The ball players realize that the girls' school, Clearwater Hall, sits right opposite the plant. Fred's sister Mary has stayed behind with a headache, so the boys pile into cars and race toward her. The Rovers run toward trouble rather than away from it.
A team that keeps fighting when the score looks bad can face a disaster.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.
