Three brothers fall into a thieves' cave

Sam and Tom Rover shout for their brother Dick on a mountainside, but no answer comes, and rain begins to fall. They are three miles from their uncle's Valley Brook farm.

Dick spotted a small red tin box hanging from a tree on a wire and stepped off the trail to look. The ground gave way, and he dropped into a hole. Soon Sam and Tom slide into the same hollow hillside, and all three land together in the dark.

Tom shoves a loose rock and finds a cave behind it. Sam has matches, so they make torches. They find animal bones, an old coat and the marks of wagon wheels. Then they find thirty or forty packing cases, and three are full and nailed shut. Dick links them to the newspaper stories about freight vanishing from railroad stations. The cave is the thieves' storeroom.

Three men arrive in a runabout car. They are called Merrick, Pike and Dangler. Hidden on a ledge, the brothers hear Merrick and Pike talk of fooling a simple man named Randolph Rover. That man is their own uncle. Dick stays calm and hides rather than charging three men.

Keep your head, watch closely, and a bad fall can become a lucky discovery.

That’s 1 of 9 key points.
