An engagement binds two families
Thora Neilsen wakes early for the sheep gathering at Thingvellir. She is engaged to steady Magnus, but it is his brother Oscar, newly home from England, who arrives with ponies to escort her. Aunt Margret notices the danger that Thora laughs away.
The engagement is meant to carry an old friendship into another generation. Thora’s merchant father and the brothers’ father, the Governor, have shared their lives for years. What happens between their children could bind the families together or turn their closeness into bitter hostility.

What this book is
The Prodigal Son is a novel by Hall Caine, set in Iceland in the nineteenth century. It follows two brothers, the steady Magnus and the gifted, charming Oscar, and the women they love in a small country where families, trade and politics are tightly bound together. The author drew on the Icelandic landscape and sagas he knew, and he built the book on the old parable of the son who squanders his gift.
You will meet a governor and a merchant who have been friends for fifty years, a sister who is warm and a sister who is hungry for a larger world, and a girl whose happiness rests on the wrong promise. The book gives you a family drama, a portrait of a nation changing from barter to cash and from rule by a governor to rule by a minister, and a long look at what one choice can cost. It also gives you geysers, lava fields, snowstorms and a sheep gathering, all of them put to work in the plot. We begin on a morning in autumn, when a girl wakes early and rides out toward the first meeting that sets everything moving.

Key point 1 of 9
A Morning Ride and Two Old Friends
The story opens on the day of the sheep gathering at Thingvellir. Thora Neilsen, the merchant's daughter, wakes before dawn and cries out that she has overslept. Her aunt Margret grumbles good-naturedly from the next room. She is engaged to Magnus, the mountain king of the gathering, but his brother Oscar has come home from England and arrives with two ponies to take her to the farm.
Aunt Margret does not like what she sees. She warns Thora that two dogs at one bone seldom agree, and she says that Jacob, Cain and the brothers of Joseph were all brothers too. Thora laughs it off, but the color in her face tells another story.
The book then steps back to the fathers. Stephen Magnusson is Governor of Iceland, proud and upright. Oscar Neilsen is the Factor, a rich merchant who counts every coin. They went to school together, studied in Copenhagen together, and married women who could hardly be more different.
It is said that if they ever stop being friends, they will become the bitterest of enemies. That sentence hangs over the whole book, and it is worth holding in mind as you read.
The two families have grown up in each other's houses, and the engagement of Thora and Magnus is meant to seal the bond for another generation.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.
