What this book is

A frightened young man stumbles into a country pub on the wild coast of Mayo, dirty and worn out. He asks whether the police ever come here. Then he says he has killed his father with a spade. Nobody sends for the police. They offer him a job, a bed and their respect.

This is The Playboy of the Western World, a comedy in three acts by J. M. Synge, the Irish playwright who died in 1909. He set it among the country people of the west, whose speech he had listened to for years. Why does a terrible deed make a nobody into somebody? Start where Christy Mahon does, at the turf fire in a shebeen, on an autumn night.

Key point 1 of 8

A stranger confesses to a shocking deed

The play opens on an autumn evening in a rough country pub, or shebeen, on the wild coast of Mayo. Pegeen Mike, a spirited girl of about twenty, is writing out an order for her wedding clothes. Her father, Michael James Flaherty, keeps the pub. Her bridegroom is Shawn Keogh, a stout and timid farmer.

Shawn fears Father Reilly more than anything on earth. Michael James and his friends plan to spend the night at a wake, and Pegeen says she dreads the dark hours alone. Michael tells Shawn to stay with her. Shawn begs, calls on his saints, and at last slips out of his coat and runs off into the dark. Pegeen has no respect left for her future husband.

Then a stranger comes in, small, dirty and worn out. He is Christy Mahon. He asks nervously whether the police ever visit. The men guess at his crime, and Christy denies it all, until Pegeen laughs that he has done nothing at all.

Stung, Christy tells what he thinks is the truth. He killed his father a week ago Tuesday, with one blow of a loy, a long spade. The room goes quiet with respect. In a lonely place a tale of violence is the best news in months, so Christy comes in a nobody and sits down a marvel.

A crime told at a safe distance can look like glamour.
