Who it’s for
You will love this book if you enjoy Scottish coasts, ghostly omens, buried treasure, secret codes, and a love story that grows through danger.
What this book is
What would you do if a stranger told you that the look on your face meant death was near? Archie Hunter, a young barrister, sits on a low wall at Cruden Bay and sees a small black box carried on a man's shoulder. Nobody else sees it. Within hours a child has drowned in the harbor.
Bram Stoker, who also wrote Dracula, published The Mystery of the Sea in 1902. He knew Cruden Bay well, and the book shows it in every rock and tide. Into that shore he places second sight, a ghostly procession of the drowned, a papal treasure lost from the Spanish Armada, a proud Spanish nobleman and a rich American heiress. He also gives you secret codes you can follow step by step.

A coffin on the bridge starts everything
Archie Hunter arrives at Cruden Bay for his yearly visit. He sits on the wall beside the bridge and watches three people go by. For a moment the man in front seems to carry a small black coffin on his shoulder. Then the picture clears and the three walk on.
A tall, gaunt old woman has been staring at him. She asks what made his eyes look so shocked. She tells him to wait, because by this time tomorrow he may know. That evening a child has drowned in the little harbor, and its parents are the very pair Archie saw on the bridge.
The woman is Gormala MacNiel, and she says she read the vision in his face. She tells him that those who are chosen to see must play their part to the end.
The first omen is a true vision, and it marks Archie as a man the Fates have picked.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.

Questions about The Mystery of the Sea
What is The Mystery of the Sea about?
It tells of Archie Hunter, a young man with second sight who lives on the Aberdeenshire coast. He helps fulfill a rune about a golden man, finds a ciphered Spanish treasure, marries an American heiress, and faces a Spanish count and a kidnapping gang.
Where is the story set and is it real?
It is set mainly at Cruden Bay, Whinnyfold and the Skares rocks in Aberdeenshire, with a castle called Crom inland. The places are real, though the story is invented, and the tale is placed in 1897 and 1898 during the Spanish American War.
What does the rune mean?
Three omens appear in the rune: the moon shining gold above an incoming tide, floods at Lammas sustaining the spell, and a golden man wedded to death. Gormala says they must come together before the Mystery of the Sea can be understood.
What is the biliteral cipher in the book?
It is a real code described by Francis Bacon, in which each letter is represented by five symbols, drawn from a and b, that can be hidden in a text. Archie adapts Bacon's cipher and uses it to read the encoded English family chronicle.
Is The Mystery of the Sea worth reading?
It suits readers who enjoy Stoker's atmosphere, with ghosts and omens, plus real puzzles, a treasure hunt and a warm, brisk romance. The sea and weather are described vividly, and the chapters move quickly from scene to scene.
