Strangeways is looking after Dr. Pumphrey's practice when a stranger asks him to visit a woman who has suffered a shock. A closed car takes him to a dark house, where a pale woman lies beside a sobbing man with clubbed fingers. Her neck bears the mark of a tightened cord.

Who it’s for

You will enjoy this book if you like clue-by-clue puzzles, sharp talk between friends, old English towns, and a calm investigator who turns small details into proof.

What this book is

Would you step into a stranger's car at midnight? A young doctor named Strangeways does, and it carries him to a dark London house where a pale woman lies on a bed with a mark around her neck. A man with clubbed fingers sobs in the corner. Nobody will give a true name or say what happened.

The Mystery of Angelina Frood is a detective novel by R. Austin Freeman, the English doctor who created the medical lawyer Dr. John Thorndyke. The question is not only who did it, but how a crime can be read from a button, a hatpin, a key and a set of fingerprints. A year later Strangeways meets the same woman again in Rochester. Then one foggy evening she walks away and does not come home.

A midnight call leads to a locked room

Strangeways is minding Dr. Pumphrey's practice in Regent's Park when a stranger rings near midnight. He asks the doctor to see a lady who has suffered a shock. He gives her name as Mrs. Johnson only after a pause. Already the doctor senses something is hidden.

A closed car carries him to a dark house. Upstairs he sees bruises on a door frame, as if it had been forced. Inside, a young woman lies pale on a bed while a man with clubbed fingers sobs in the corner. Under her cloak the doctor finds a livid mark around her neck, left by a cord pulled tight. She says a gold collar made it, and he does not believe her.

By the gas fire he reasons it through. The mark points to attempted suicide or murder, and the door was broken from outside. Later he finds the house empty and advertised to let. Notice the small things, because this story uses every one of them.

That’s 1 of 9 key points.
