Key point 1 of 6

A boy escapes a witch's house

Tip lives on a farm in the Gillikin Country, the northern part of Oz. He serves an old woman named Mombi, a witch whom the neighbors fear. He does her chores and has no memory of parents.

One day Tip makes himself a companion. He carves a man from wood and fits a pumpkin on top for a head, with a wide, cheerful smile. He sets it on the road to scare Mombi, since he enjoys a prank.

This small act of play sets the whole book in motion. Mombi's curiosity leads her to try a new magic, and Tip must choose between staying and running. A child with no power chooses to act.
