The Marvellous Adventures and Rare Conceits of Master Tyll Owlglass in short
Tyll grows from a muddy-baptized child into a traveler who cheats bakers, doctors, priests, scholars and lords. His chief weapon is the literal word, and his chief target is pride, greed and empty authority. What you keep is a way of listening.
What The Marvellous Adventures and Rare Conceits of Master Tyll Owlglass is about
What happens when a servant does exactly what he is told? A baker snaps, bake owls and monkeys, and Tyll Owlglass bakes owls and monkeys. A tailor says, make a wolf, and a stuffed wolf soon stands on the workbench.
The Marvellous Adventures and Rare Conceits of Master Tyll Owlglass gathers one hundred and ten adventures about a wandering rogue from Brunswick. The old German folk book appeared in print in 1519, and Kenneth R. H. Mackenzie brought it to English readers in 1859, in the teasing voice of a chronicler who calls his hero noble and then sighs over his latest crime. You meet a poor, quick, shameless hero who shows up greed, pride and empty learning.
Who it’s for. Readers fond of trickster tales, medieval comedy and sharp satire will delight in Tyll. Lovers of folk tales and clever comebacks will enjoy these short stories made for sharing aloud.

A rogue is born in a muddy ditch
Tyll is born in Kneitlingen, a village in the land of Brunswick, to Claus Owlglass and his wife, Anna Wertbeck. After a great feast he is sent to be christened.
On the way home the godparents are hot, tired and careless. One of them trips on a stone and drops the baby into a muddy ditch. The child is unhurt, because weeds are not easily harmed. He is washed in warm water at home, so he has been baptized three times in a single day.
His wit shows before he can walk the roads. A rider asks where his parents are, and the child answers in riddles. Asked which way to ride, he says to follow the geese, and when they swim away, he tells the man to ride where they go, not where they swim.
Tyll answers the word rather than the meaning, and the blame lands on the listener. A trickster is shaped early, by sharp ears and a ready tongue.

Questions about The Marvellous Adventures and Rare Conceits of Master Tyll Owlglass
What is Till Eulenspiegel about?
It follows Tyll Owlglass, a wandering peasant rogue in medieval Germany. In over one hundred short adventures he tricks bakers, doctors, priests, scholars, innkeepers and lords, often by taking their words exactly as spoken.
What does Owlglass or Eulenspiegel mean?
Eulenspiegel means owl mirror in German, and Owlglass is its English form. Tyll leaves an owl and a glass as his sign. The name later became a word for a prank in several languages.
Was Tyll Owlglass a real person?
Tradition places a real peasant rogue of that name in the fourteenth century in the Brunswick region. The tales gathered many jests from other sources, so the book mixes a legendary hero with older stories.
Is it easy to read?
Each adventure is a short, self-contained tale with a clear setup and a quick punchline, so you can read one at a time. The chronicler's friendly voice and the repeated patterns make the stories easy to follow.
What is the main message of the book?
The tales laugh at pride, greed and empty authority. They show that careless words and false learning leave people open to being fooled, and that laughter can teach lessons a sermon cannot.
