Hiding begins with a careful plan

The five brothers choose Matsya for the year they must spend unrecognized. Each takes a useful role: dice player, cook, keeper of horses, keeper of cattle, or teacher of song and dance. Draupadi will work as a hairdresser, protected by her claim that five Gandharva husbands guard her.

Before entering the city, they hide their weapons in a Sami tree beside a cemetery. Their safety depends on more than false names. They must control their speech, accept humble work and keep their strength out of sight.

Who it’s for

This book will delight readers who love tales of disguise, epic duels and clever heroes, and anyone curious about Indian epic tradition, loyal brothers and the bold Draupadi.

What this book is

What would you do if you had to vanish for a year, knowing that one slip would cost you twelve more years in the forest? Five brothers face that choice at the start of the Virata Parva. They have lost their kingdom at dice and spent twelve years in exile. Now they must live the thirteenth year among strangers, and their enemy Duryodhana must not learn where they are.

This is the fourth book of the Mahabharata, the great Sanskrit epic that tradition credits to the sage Vyasa. You get the whole year, from the first plan to the last battle.

Key point 1 of 10

A careful plan and a tree full of weapons

The thirteenth year begins with a council of five brothers. Yudhishthira picks the kingdom of Matsya, whose old king, Virata, is friendly to the Pandavas.

Each brother chooses a false life. Yudhishthira will be Kanka, a dice player. Bhima will be Vallava, a cook and wrestler. Nakula will keep the horses and Sahadeva the cattle. Arjuna chooses the boldest cover. Scars of the bowstring mark his arms, so he will wear bangles and a braid and teach song and dance to the palace women. Draupadi will pose as a hairdresser and say that five Gandharva husbands guard her.

The priest Dhaumya gives them rules for living near a king. Speak only when asked, and never take the king's seat. Near the city, they hide their weapons in a tall Sami tree beside a cemetery. They hang a corpse there so that no one will climb up.

Wise hiding begins before the first step, with a plan for words, work and weapons.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.
