Key ideas
Key idea 1
Poverty wears away a person's identity
In a cave-like cellar, people wake to quarrels, illness and the pressure of rent. Anna asks for peace as she lies dying, while her husband Kleshtch insists he will escape the place. Others remember former lives: Bubnoff had a shop, and Satine worked as a telegraph operator and read books.
Their memories matter because the cellar strips away more than money. Work, names and hope are slipping from them too. Gorky makes the whole crowd his subject, allowing their arguments and remembered lives to show what poverty does to people.

Who it’s for
This is for readers who love drama built on talk, crowded rooms and sharp tongues, and for anyone drawn to people at the bottom of society who still argue about hope and dignity.
What this book is
Picture waking each day in a cave-like cellar with a low, grimy ceiling, peeling plaster and bunks along the stone walls. Hope survives here, but it struggles against poverty. Then an old wanderer walks in with a kettle and a teapot at his belt, and says one place is as good as another.
The Lower Depths is a play in four acts by Maksim Gorky, first staged in Russia in 1902. It is set in a night lodging run by a greedy landlord and his sharp-tongued wife. Gorky knew poverty from his own youth, and he gives these people a voice instead of pity.

Key point 1 of 8
A cellar where nobody expects a tomorrow
The play opens on an early spring morning in a cellar that looks like a cave. The ceiling is low and grimy, and bunks line the walls. Thin boards in one corner make a tiny room for the thief Vaska Pepel.
The people are already quarrelling. Kvashnya, a meat-pie seller, swears she would not marry again for a hundred baked lobsters, and the locksmith Kleshtch tells her she is lying. Behind a curtain, Kleshtch's wife Anna coughs, and she asks only to be left in peace to die.
Gorky gives each person a scrap of the past. Bubnoff the cap-maker once had a fur shop. Satine was once a telegraph operator who read many books. Everyone here used to be somebody, or says so.
Kleshtch calls the others scum and swears he will crawl out of the cellar, even if he leaves his skin behind. The landlord Kostilyoff counts every half ruble and threatens to raise his rent while the man's wife is dying. Money, lust and fear of the police all press in from above.
There is no single hero here. The crowd is the subject.
The cellar shows that poverty is not only hunger but a daily loss of names, work and hope.
That’s 1 of 8 key points.
