The Little Gold Miners of the Sierras and Other Stories in short
The collection runs from a California mining claim to a Boston orphans' home, and nearly every tale follows a young person who learns something about himself. Jim Keene finds that a boy is not yet a man. Top Junior learns what heroism can look like.
What The Little Gold Miners of the Sierras and Other Stories is about
What does it take to turn a wild boy into an honest worker, or a plain man into a hero? This collection of American tales from the nineteenth century asks that question in mining camps, railway kitchens, school dormitories and New England farmyards.
It opens with the title story by Joaquin Miller, the poet who made the Sierra Nevada his subject. The stories are often funny.
Who it’s for. You will love this book if you enjoy short, warm tales of boyhood, frontier camps and clever inventions, told with humor and a lesson. It suits families who read aloud together.

Jim Keene finds honest work in the Sierras
The title story is set in the gold country of California. The Keene children's mother died on the trip across the plains, and their father broke his leg coming down the mountains. Jim, the eldest, chases jackrabbits instead of going to school. Madge, ten, cooks the meals. Little Stumps clings to her dress wherever she goes.
The miners pay for the children's schooling, but Jim drops his slate whenever a deer crosses the path. The schoolmaster has a better idea. The boy needs an honest way to use his strength, so set him to hunting nuggets instead of birds' nests.
Mr. Keene stakes a claim under an oak and sets up a sluice box. Jim, who could never sit still in a classroom, digs day after day, up to his waist in the pit. Then his shout rings across the hills about the first colors he finds.
Mr. Keene buys Jim a red shirt, rubber boots and a broad hat. Jim decides that an honest miner must smoke a pipe, so he buys one. His walk up the hill, puffing in his fine new clothes, is told with great comic relish. The kind way the rough miners treat his mistake is the heart of the tale.
Honest work and honest shame can turn a wild boy toward goodness.
